Learning About Biology with Preschoolers

As an Experience Early Learning Blog Ambassador, we receive the Experience Early Learning preschool curriculum in exchange for sharing our honest and authentic stories resulting from our personal experiences. As always, our opinions on amazing things for children are 100% our own. Keep in mind that all preschoolers do things in their own time and on their own terms. What one is ready for, another might not be. Please use your best judgement when planning activities for your children.

Our theme this month from Experience Early Learning formerly Mother Goose Time is Science Lab and this week we're focusing on Biology with topics such as Living & Nonliving, Growing & Changing, Adaptation, Germs, and Ecology.

preschoolers playing Is It Living? game

One of the children's favorite literacy activities this week was Is It Living? We were sent a printable that included the following questions:

  • Does it move all by itself?

  • Does it grow and change?

  • Does it breathe?

  • Does it need food and water to survive?

We brainstormed a list of things we see outside and asked, "Is a __________ living or nonliving? We used the yes or no cards and question board From Experience Early Learning to determine the answer.

Another favorite this week was Growing Hair. We used nylon footies and wiggle eyes to make "heads" and then planted grass seeds to make hair.

This was such a cute activity and perfect for learning about plants and seeds while practicing fine motor skills.

And of course, we can't forget about this week's STEAM Fairy Houses activity. The children worked together to build Fairy Houses using sticks, leaves, rocks, and other nature items.

That wraps up our Science Lab theme from Experience Early Learning (formerly Mother Goose Time). We definitely had lots of fun with this preschool theme!
