Log Jam Invitation to Create Process Art Experience

Cristi Wuenschel

As an Experience Early Learning Blog Ambassador, we receive the Experience Early Learning preschool curriculum in exchange for sharing our honest and authentic stories resulting from our personal experiences. As always, our opinions on amazing things for children are 100% our own. Keep in mind that all preschoolers do things in their own time and on their own terms. What one is ready for, another might not be. Please use your best judgement when planning activities for your children.

This month, we're learning about Fables & Folktales with Experience Early Learning (formerly Mother Goose Time) and today we're reading Paul Bunyan & the Log Jam.

During circle time, we practiced numbers 1-10 with a fun number recognition log jam activity.

We read our story for today and then spent some time experimenting with making our own water jams using a container of water, rocks, sticks, and other nature items.

Today's creative art was lots of fun! We used different colored paper to make log jam collages.

We started with the Inspiration Photo and our background paper and then using scissors and glue, we created log jam process art.

This activity was a great way to practice fine motor skills as well as logic and reasoning. The prompts that were included in this week's Experience Early Learning Teacher Guide were perfect for getting the preschoolers thinking.

  • What colors or shapes do you notice in the photo?

  • Will you draw animals or fish in the river?

  • How can you use the nature items in your art?

  • Will you tear the paper or cut it?

Of course, we love the observation questions too: Does the child tear or cut paper? Does he or she explain how a log jam is created?

This theme has been so much fun for all of us! Not only are we reading lots of fun stories, but we're also exploring important math, literacy, art, and STEAM concepts.

Don't forget to check back next week as we get started with our Friends & Feelings preschool theme from Experience Early Learning (formerly Mother Goose Time).
