Zoo Activities for Preschoolers

Updated: Jun 14, 2022

As an Experience Early Learning Blog Ambassador, we receive the Experience Early Learning preschool curriculum in exchange for sharing our honest and authentic stories resulting from our personal experiences. As always, our opinions on amazing things for children are 100% our own. Keep in mind that all preschoolers do things in their own time and on their own terms. What one is ready for, another might not be. Please use your best judgement when planning activities for your children.

This week, our Experience Early Learning (formerly Mother Goose Time) topic is "Animals F-K," which means we're learning about foxes, gorillas, hippos, inchworms, jellyfish, and kangaroos. What a variety, right?

This week also meant lots of hands-on zoo activities and today I'm going to share a few of our favorites.

While learning about gorillas, we used combs to make an adorable gorilla mask. Comb painting is perfect because the teeth of the comb give the masks texture that resembles gorilla fur.

This make & play activity was the perfect opportunity to talk about how a mama gorilla takes care of her baby and how the preschoolers' families care for them.

Inchworm day was also lots of fun too! Our math and literacy activities were I is for Inchworm and How many inchworms?

We also made Inchworm process art. This was such a creative activity! We used forks to paint grass and then added paper strip inchworms.

Today's invitation to create from Experience Early Learning encouraged the children to make their inchworm artwork three-dimensional, which meant practicing creative thinking and problem-solving skills.

We also learned that J is for jellyfish and K is for kangaroo. We learned all about the different types of jellyfish and their stingers.

For today's math activity, we made a jellyfish table with tentacles and had them crawl under without touching the tentacles.

They also played a kangaroo game. The preschoolers had to roll the dice, get the Joey out of the mom kangaroo’s pouch and move it however many spots they rolled.

They also colored the letter J and K in their alphabet book. This month's theme has been a wonderful way to review all of the preschool skills we've learned this year.

Don't forget to check back next week to see what we're up to with our A-Zoo Animals preschool theme from Experience Early Learning (formerly Mother Goose Time).
